With over 36 million members and much media exposure, you would think by now most people would know how www.LinkedIn.com works.
Recently, I sent a LinkedIn invitation to someone I met. They wrote me back in being excited about joining my network on LinkedIn. Then the person said "what is LinkedIn and what do I do next"? The reality is the power of LinkedIn facilitating social network connections for a job search or closing business deals is a foreign thought to many people. For people who know about LinkedIn, getting started is still a daunting challenge. Using all of LinkedIn's powerful features does take some dedication in time, mixed with a little patience.
Lucky for ETP Network members, we have 2 in-house LinkedIn gurus to minimize the learning curve. Platinum member Tom Kenny has published LinkedIn "How To's" on his website and the Jersey Shore Networking blog. Jason Alba, the author of "I'm on LinkedIn Now What???" and CEO of Jibber Jobber, is also an ETP Network Platinum member.
The ETP Network toolbar, powered by Counduit, makes it easy to quickly access these LinkedIn knowledge resources provided by Tom and Jason.
From the "Tools" pull down menu in the toolbar select . . .

I am somewhat surprised when I find someone who is unaware of LinkedIn. I typically find one or two every few weeks when I train the newly transitioning at New Brunswick's Professional Services Group. But even more surprised when someone who is on LinkedIn comments that it hasn't helped them get a job.
LinkedIn is a tool, just like the resume, the cover letter, the telephone, email, networking group, weekly conference calls, etc. are tools. This comprises the job search toolkit. However, as with any tool, an individual needs appropriate training to use it correctly and injure themselves.
Would you hand a power saw, a nail gun, a tape measure and several cords of wood to a novice and expect them to build you a solid, stable and functional piece of furniture? Would the novice expect that of themselves? In order to use the tools properly one needs training.
And there is plenty of training available. Take advantage of the resources on this blog, and those of others within the ETP Network. Join networking groups and meet new people who you can help and who can help you. Volunteer to keep your skills sharp and to expand your network: PSG is a good start.
Bottom line, you need to take ownership of your job search toolkit, and you need to know how to use each of those properly, including LinkedIn.

Genesius, yes this true. To many think of their LinkedIn profile as a static web page, aka their online resume. However, LinkedIn is a very dynamic online site for professional networking. For example, LinkedIn Answers, Groups, Network Updates, Polls and many other features that make it a very interactive tool to network online.
